Aix en Provence is a cultured and lively university town at the foothills of Mont Sainte Victoire, the little Paris in the Provence. The area around it, the Pays d'Aix, is wonderful if you stay in the right area. Towards the south - except for some hilltop villages - the suburbs of Marseilles are about to reach Aix.

Marseille is not on most foreign visitors' list - may be unjustly so. While it has none of the "Provence Mystique" it is a bustling, lively Mediterranean port - currently not very visitor friendly, but very interesting. With the arrival of the TGV high speed train (3 1/2 hours to Paris) certain parts of Marseille are experiencing a Renaissance of sort. The massive urban renewal project along the Port of Marseille is scheduled to be finished in 2012.

Cassis and the Calanques east of Marseille are great places to visit when "les Marseillais" are not around (too crowded then). The Côte Bleue west of Marseille is popular with the French - for our taste too crowded and on many days too exposed to the odors of the Étang de Berre petrochemical zone further inland.
