Market in Aix en Provence

The marchés in France are generally open air markets, a place to shop for your fresh groceries. We prefer to buy meat, fish and produce there rather than in the supermarkets. The marchés are fabulous, free entertainment, good for shopping and for people watching. Sit in one of the cafés next to a market and while away the morning. The Provence has probably the best markets in France. Here is a practical guide as to where, when and what. Most open air markets are farmers markets, a retail market where you can buy vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meat and poultry, sausages, spices, candied fruits, nougat and flowers. The larger Marché Provençal offers all of the farmers markets' products plus clothing, shoes, linens, pottery and many other useful and not so useful Provence knickknacks.

Here are our favourite markets (in alphabetical order):

  1. Aix en Provence, the various markets are well integrated into the historic town, great place to sit and watch.
  2. Carpentras, one of the largest in France and in existence since 1155. Huge, bustling, wonderful! If you don't find what you need here then what?
  3. l'Isle sur la Sorgue, visit the Sunday morning Provençal market, the over 300 antique shops and the many itinerant brocantes (selling not so old antiques).
  4. Nice, a colorful array of markets, the fish market, old books market, the farmers market and the most famous of all, the Marché aux Fleurs, the flower and produce market.
  5. Vaison la Romaine, huge Provençal market, one of the best places to shop for Provence bric-a-bracs.

Now, here is the list of the markets in the Provence - to the best of our knowledge, no guarantees.

Our top choices:

Aix en ProvenceLes Grand Marchés: each Tues, Thurs & Sat (9:00AM - 12:30PM), large Provençal markets on Place des Precheurs, Place de la Madeleine and the Quartiers d'Encagnane and Jas de Bouffan. Magnificent!
Marché Place Richelme: a local producers market on Place Richelme near the city hall, daily 9:00AM - 12:30PM
Marché aux Fleurs: Tues, Thurs & Sat on Place de l'Hotel de Ville
Brocantes Market: not so old antiques, Tues, Thurs & Sat on Place Verdun near the Palais de Justice
Marché aux Livres: old and used books, 1st Sunday each month on Place de l'Hotel de Ville
ArlesMarché Provençal: Saturday morning on Blvd. des Lices and Blvd. Clémenceau, really worthwhile!
Wednesday morning: small green market on Blvd. Emile Combes
AvignonMarché aux Fleurs: flower market on Place des Carmes every Saturday morning
Marché aux Puces: flea market on Place des Carmes every Sunday morning
Marché couvert dans les Halles: daily market (except Monday) in the (butt ugly) market hall but great place for gourmets

CarpentrasMarché Provençal: Friday morning, its huge with over 350 stalls continuously in existence since 1155 - really worthwhile!
Marché aux Truffes: Friday morning in front of the Hôtel Dieu from last Friday in November to early March - worthwhile taking a look, but don't buy unless you are an expert!
l'Isle sur la SorgueMarché Provençal: farmer's market and Provence knickknack Sunday morning - a great place to sit in a café and do people watching!
There is a smaller farmer's market Thursday morning
MornasMarché aux Puces: huge flea market next to Rte.N7 (north of Orange) every Sunday from 11:00AM onwards
NiceMarché aux Fleurs: a colorful flower and produce market on Cours Saleya daily (6:00AM - 5:30PM) except Monday and holidays. Remember Grace Kelly & Cary Grant in "To Catch a Thief"?

Marché aux Cartes Postales Anciennes: old postcards, Place du Palais de Justice, last Saturday each month 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Ste.Cécile les VignesMarché Provençal: on Saturday morning, a charming market, with just the right size and that "neighbourhood feeling"
Vaison la RomaineMarché Provençal: huge market each Tuesday morning for farmers produce and all sorts of Provence knickknack, second only to Carpentras in size, great people watching event!
VelleronGreat place to buy fruits & veggies directly from producers. Located just north of l'Isle sur la Sorgue. Heavily frequented by locals who shop for fruits here to make marmelades and jams.
