Nice: La Fontaine du Soleil

Here are our restaurant recommendations for the Alpes Maritimes, the département with Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Menton, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, Mougins, St.Paul de Vence, the perched villages around Tourettes sur Loup and many other highlights. The area is densely populated, very busy and studded with Michelin star restaurants - a few are listed here. The real fun are the numerous no star restaurants which offer excellent price/quality.

Antibes Juan-les-Pins

De Bacon, Cap d'Antibes: In our opinion one of the best seafood restaurants in Antibes if not on the Côte d'Azur. Chic and relaxed surroundings with superb views. We like it more than the widely acclaimed Tetou. You find a better price/quality here and you can eat in peace without the Brangelina hype. Wide choice of seafood prepared in a variety of ways including the region's classic, the bouillabaisse - a superb bouillabaisse! Service is gracious, prices are steep but it's worth the money. Prices: €60-90. 688 Boulevard de Bacon, Cap d'Antibes, Antibes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 61 50 02

Les Vieux Murs, Antibes: In the old ramparts of Antibes with panoramic views of the Baie des Anges this restaurant serves refined, trendy Provençal cuisine. Beautiful setting, diligent at times over motivated service. Prices: €29-45. 25, Promenade Amiral de Grasse, Antibes, Tel: +33 (0)04 93 34 06 73

Oscar's, Antibes: A gastro-trattoria in the heart of Vieux Antibes. Italo-Provençal cuisine expertly prepared by Oscar Ianacone, a transplanted Neapolitan firmly routed on the Côte d'Azur. Closed 2 weeks in June! We suspect Oscar does his annual pilgrimage to la "Mama" in Napoli. Prices: €30-56. 8 Rue du Docteur Rostand, Antibes. Tel: +33 (0)4 93 34 90 14

Cannes and Environs

Le Restaurant Arménien: Probably one of the top Armenian restaurants around. Lucie and Christian offer tasty Armenian food in a convivial atmosphere. A great alternative if you are looking for more spice in your dinner. Lots of celebrities have checked it out. Prices: €42. 82 Boulevard de la Croisette, Cannes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 94 00 58

Il Girasole (Chez Franco), Cannes: Genova born Franco Pilise's knowledge about pasta is legendary around Cannes. Regulars come from afar to enjoy his cooking. Simple, but deliciously made dishes. Prices do not make your wallet pinch. Prices: €25. 14 rue de Constantine, Cannes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 99 14 17

L'Ardoise, Cannes: This tiny bistro - literllay the "blackboard" - close to the Hotel de Ville (town hall) is a success! Proper and clever Provençal cooking. Prices are just and guests are happy. Prices: €20-40. 5 Rue Rouguière, Cannes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 39 09 02

Caffé Roma, Cannes: The No.1 celebrity spotting place just in front "le bunker", that's how the locals call the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. Well chosen Italian and Mediterranean dishes served either on the café's terrace or inside the more upscale dining room. Despite its celebrity status a good price/quality. Prices: €15-30. 1, Square Mérimée, Cannes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 38 05 04

Restaurant Côté Jardin, Cannes: A few minutes from busy la Croisette behind the Palais de Justice is this country house style restaurant with unpretentious ambiance. Refined Provençal cuisine with generous portions, reasonable prices and courteous service. Very popular with the local foodies - always a good sign. Prices: €23-30. 12, Avenue Saint-Louis, Cannes, Tel: +33 (0)4 93 38 60 28
